The Christmas Jumper

Wednesday 8th December, 2021

One in five Brits will wear a Christmas jumper on 25th December, it’s a long standing trend! But, we can promise you, there are more than enough Christmas jumpers in circulation. With Christmas jumpers reaching a new level of popularity in the 80’s thanks to films such as National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Home Alone, there are at least three decades of brilliant designs to choose from.

The trend originated from heavy, warm knitwear originated with Scandinavian fishermen. From the warm winter jumper to the cheery, acrylic sweaters, the Christmas jumper has earned it’s place in our winter wardrobes. Figures from 2019 show consumers will spend about £220m on festive jumpers this year.
A spokeswoman for Hubbub described the Christmas jumper as "one of the worst examples of fast fashion" and warned that such consumer habits are a "major threat" to the planet.

They not only contribute to our ever growing landfill pile, they are made of *drum roll please* plastic. Hubbub project co-ordinator Sarah Divall says, "We'd urge people to swap, buy second-hand or re-wear - and remember a jumper is for life, not just for Christmas."

So either dig out your Christmas jumper from last year or if you fancy something different, we have plenty of guilt free seasonal wooly jumpers, from the garish to the subtle, we’ve got a winter warmer for you this Christmas.
